Senator Farnsworth Highlights Alarming Federal Report on Chinese Military
Influence on University Research Projects
PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Senator David Farnsworth, Chair of the Senate Appropriations and Transportation Committee, is drawing attention to national security concerns after a U.S. House investigation uncovered that Pentagon-funded university research is being exploited by the Chinese Communist Party to enhance China's military capabilities.
A federal report found that over 1,400 Defense Department-backed university research projects have direct links to Chinese institutions connected to the People's Liberation Army. These sensitive areas include hypersonic propulsion, nuclear science, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence—technologies that the Pentagon considers critical for U.S. national security.
The report raises important questions about foreign influence in academic settings and the potential exposure of advanced U.S. research to institutions associated with adversarial military forces. Although the report does not allege any wrongdoing by Arizona universities, it serves as a clear warning that vigilance is essential. In response, Senator Farnsworth is highlighting these risks and encourages Arizona's higher education community to recognize the seriousness of the situation and take proactive measures.
"Arizona's universities serve as hubs for innovation; it's crucial that we help them maintain their independence," said Senator Farnsworth. "I am truly passionate about education in our state and want to protect our institutions from foreign influence. However, this will require a team effort. I look forward to collaborating with Arizona’s universities and education experts to create thoughtful legislation that ensures a safe and responsible future for our schools. We’ll focus on safeguarding our invaluable research from adversarial governments seeking to exploit our innovations for their own strategic gain. Together, we can foster stronger oversight, boost transparency, and ensure we responsibly manage taxpayer-funded research for the benefit of everyone in Arizona."
