Senator Bolick Cracks Down on Animal Cruelty in Arizona,
Legislation Advances to the Governor
PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Senate Republicans are championing efforts to protect the health and well-being of the state's furry, four-legged friends with final passage broadening the conditions under which animal cruelty can be charged. A bill to do just that passed out of the Arizona Senate with bipartisan support after being transmitted by the House of Representatives. The legislation will now await action by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs.
SB 1658, sponsored by Senator Shawnna Bolick, helps protect domestic animals from neglect and abuse by specifying the most basic care required, under state law, which must be provided by pet owners or pet caregivers. The bill adds penalties for intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly failing to provide medical attention necessary to prevent unreasonable suffering to any domestic animal under the person's custody or control.
"How we treat our animal friends says a lot about our society," said Senator Bolick. "There are too many stories of animal cruelty around Arizona, leading to the necessity of this legislation to help protect their well-being. These innocent animals are voiceless, but when they suffer, it speaks volumes. It is time for our state to take decisive action to defend the animals that depend on us for safekeeping. I applaud both my Republican and Democrat colleagues for their support in passing this bill out of the Senate, and I call on Governor Hobbs to sign the proposal when it comes to her desk."
"This landmark victory is a powerful testament to what can be achieved when passionate individuals come together to champion change," said Dr. Steven Hansen, President and CEO of the Arizona Humane Society. "It would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our steadfast advocates who stood up for the voiceless, our law enforcement, animal welfare and rescue group partners, Representative Walt Blackman, and the fierce leadership of the bill sponsor, Senator Shawnna Bolick."
