Senate Republicans Introduce Balanced State Budget with Strategic Investments
in Public Safety, Education, Transportation, Water, Public Health
PHOENIX, ARIZONA – Senate Republicans are advancing a balanced state budget with strategic investments in public safety, education, transportation, water, and public health. This fiscally responsible proposal benefiting all Arizonans will be introduced later today.
"This is a bipartisan budget the republican majority can fully support and the governor will sign," said Senate President Warren Petersen. "We are protecting the interests of Arizona by boosting pay for public safety personnel and increasing public safety resources to support safer communities. We're funding important road projects critical to our economy. We're making needed upgrades to infrastructure and taking steps to safeguard Arizona's water future. We're also addressing gaps in our state's public health system. We're doing all of this without raising taxes on our hardworking citizens."
"Unlike the House budget, the budget we're introducing in the Senate does not extend a $100 million tax, and it does not include unconstitutional policy measures," said Senate Appropriations Chairman John Kavanagh. "The governor has been adamant she will veto the House budget. With the possibility of a government shutdown in a matter of days, we must move forward with our conservative spending plan, and we're calling on our colleagues in both chambers to support it."
"This budget is viable, unlike the fantasyland budget proposed in the House," said President Pro Tempore T.J. Shope. "Elections have consequences. We are in an era of divided government, and we must proceed as such. Republicans can't get everything they want, and neither can Democrats. We did very well with protecting and funding our republican priorities."
The Senate Republican budget proposal will be heard in Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday and is expected to be voted on by the full Senate body on Wednesday before being immediately transmitted to the House for consideration.
