Senate Republicans Respond to Isaac Elementary School District Financial Crisis

PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Senate Republicans are investigating potential legislative reforms to help ensure another financial crisis does not arise within Arizona's public school districts, and to develop a pathway forward for students and teachers at Isaac Elementary School District in Phoenix amid a massive budget shortfall.

Earlier this month, the Arizona State Board of Education put the district of approximately 5000 students within a dozen schools under receivership after financial mismanagement led to the overspending of nearly $20 million. In response, the district's superintendent announced his intent to resign. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Education announced yesterday the federal government is providing $6 million to the district to help cover costs so that students and teachers are not immediately disrupted while a solution to the funding crisis is identified and implemented.

"I'm incredibly concerned by what's transpired within the Isaac Elementary School District. My colleagues in both the Senate and House are investigating what led to the tremendous overspending and what legislative reforms we need to adopt to make certain a similar situation doesn't happen in the future," said Senate Education Committee Chair David Farnsworth. "What the State of Arizona won't do is provide this school district a financial bailout without implementing any corrective policies. Doing so would only be a Band Aid on the wound and would most certainly do more harm than good."

"My heart goes out to the teachers and staff of Isaac Elementary School District, many of whom are already living paycheck to paycheck and are now fearing the money isn't going to hit their bank accounts come pay day because of the gross financial mismanagement by administrators within this district," said Senate Education Committee Vice-Chair Carine Werner. "We are working on solutions to ensure the children of these schools are not disrupted in their learning environments and those responsible are held accountable."

"Government incompetence has victimized the parents, students and teachers of this district. I look forward to reforming this broken financial system through legislation, and I encourage parents to closely examine their school choice options to get their kids into a stable educational setting that guarantees both academic excellence and fiscal responsibility," said Senate Regulatory Affairs & Government Accountability Committee Chair Shawnna Bolick. "Arizona taxpayers will not be on the hook for this corruption, and if a criminal investigation is necessary, I'm hopeful Arizona's Attorney General will take immediate action to bring justice to the families impacted by this maladministration."
