Senate Ethics Committee Chairwoman Takes Action on Complaint Against Senator Ortiz, Refers to U.S. Attorney's Office for Federal Review

PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Senate Ethics Committee Chairwoman Shawnna Bolick is taking immediate action in response to a formal ethics complaint filed against Senator Analise Ortiz on September 2. The complaint alleges that Senator Ortiz interfered with federal immigration enforcement operations in Arizona. As a result, Senator Bolick will be sending a letter today to refer the matter to the U.S. Attorney's Office, as the allegations involve federal law enforcement and require investigation by the appropriate authorities.

Chairwoman Bolick is stressing the importance of this issue, which dates back to 2021. At that time, she became the first state legislator to pass a bill addressing the misuse of personal information online. The legislation, known as HB 2502, was signed into law. It established that electronically distributing someone else's personal identifying information without their consent, with the intent to provoke harassment by a third party, is classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor. This law aims to prevent the abuse of power in such situations.

"I take this complaint very seriously. Doxing federal ICE agents is not only reckless, it endangers lives and undermines the rule of law," said Chairwoman Bolick. "The Senate Ethics Committee has not met this year, and before addressing the complaint, the committee must first adopt its operating rules. Once those rules are established, the committee will conduct a thorough review of the facts, strictly adhering to constitutional standards, as well as applicable state and local laws. I have distributed the complaint to all committee members and Senator Ortiz in a single email to ensure full transparency. This is an issue I do not take lightly, and I am committed to ensuring that it is handled with the full weight of the law and the Constitution. Until then, the process remains with the U.S. Attorney's Office, whose review will inform the committee's next steps."
