Senate Republicans Pass Bills to Enhance Immigration Enforcement in Arizona

PHOENIX, ARIZONA—Senate Republicans are taking action to enhance the state's immigration policies to better protect the sovereignty and safety of Arizona communities. Two immigration enforcement-related bills passed the Senate today with all Republicans voting in support, while all Democrats voted in opposition.

SB 1520, sponsored by Senator Wendy Rogers, requires Arizona state agencies to share immigration-related information with the federal government when it is requested. If federal authorities request data regarding individuals who are in the country illegally or who have overstayed a visa, state agencies must provide that information to support federal enforcement efforts.

SB 1421, also sponsored by Senator Rogers, establishes new requirements for certain financial services operating in Arizona. The bill prevents banks, lenders, check-cashing businesses, and money transfer companies from accepting specific forms of identification issued to individuals who are unlawfully present in the United States. It also requires verification of lawful presence before certain foreign money transfers can be completed and imposes civil penalties on businesses that violate the law.

"In the first 13 months of his term, President Donald J. Trump has done wonders to reverse the crisis at our southern border that was caused by the previous administration," said Senator Rogers. "As much as President Trump's actions have corrected the lawlessness that besieged our state for four long years, we know there is more to be done to ensure lasting law and order for the administrations that follow. I'm proud to stand with President Trump and introduce these bills that would fortify state cooperation with the federal government and strengthen banking requirements and enforcement to discourage illegal aliens from utilizing key services. While Republicans are on board with these bills, it's time for my Democrat colleagues to put politics aside and join us to enhance protections for our citizens."

Both bills will now head to the House for consideration.
