Senate Republicans Advance Border Security Package as Democrat Governor, Attorney General Undermine Law Enforcement

PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Senate Republicans are advancing a comprehensive border security package to ensure that Arizona stands firmly with law enforcement and safe communities, even as Arizona's attorney general and governor continue to send dangerous and irresponsible signals to the public.

SB 1474 establishes clear requirements for state and local cooperation with federal immigration authorities, including enhanced training for law enforcement and the authority to investigate violations.

SB 1156 appropriates $20 million to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to reimburse costs associated with short-term detention holds for illegal aliens.

SB 1157 appropriates $20 million to DPS to reimburse the installation of fencing or bollard walls in high-crossing areas along Arizona's southern border.

SB 1707 appropriates $5 million to DPS for artificial intelligence technology to strengthen border security and enhance enforcement operations.

"Arizona's attorney general and governor have shown that they prioritize protecting those who violate immigration laws over supporting law enforcement," said Senator Wendy Rogers. "Their actions have created hostility toward officers simply doing their jobs. Arizona must not tolerate harmful rhetoric against those who protect us. My legislation clearly supports law enforcement, the rule of law, and the citizens who deserve safe neighborhoods. If state leaders won't advocate for public safety, the Republican-led Legislature will."

"The people of Arizona expect their elected officials to prioritize the safety of our communities, not undermine them," said Senate President Warren Petersen. "When state leaders promote extreme rhetoric that weakens law enforcement or encourages lawbreakers, it endangers both officers and families. This legislative package reinforces a fundamental principle: laws matter, and those responsible for enforcing them deserve our complete support. We will continue working to provide resources for law enforcement because protecting Arizona communities is not optional; it is our duty."

This package of legislation, sponsored by Senator Rogers, is headed to the Senate floor for a full vote after passing committee this week.

Arizona's attorney general has stated that under the state's self-defense laws, individuals can use lethal force if they believe their lives are in danger, even when encountering federal immigration officers. In parallel, the governor has launched a website detailing rights during interactions with ICE agents and other law enforcement. These actions pose increased risks to communities and send a hostile message to law enforcement officers doing their job.
