Republican Lawmakers Advance Bill to Support Continuation of Arizona Criminal Justice Commission

PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Senator Shawnna Bolick is supporting Arizona's law enforcement with legislation to continue the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission (ACJC).
In a 7-1 vote Wednesday afternoon, the House Judiciary Committee passed a "strike everything amendment" from House Representative Quang Nguyen on SB 1227, sponsored by Senator Bolick. The adopted amendment continues ACJC for two years and makes various modifications to its membership and operation.
ACJC is responsible for monitoring the implementation of criminal justice legislation, promoting interagency research, and compiling various reports for the governor and legislature on the state's criminal justice system. ACJC also oversees statistical analyses, supports community crime prevention programs, and sets rules for grant and fund allocations. The legislation as amended modifies the ACJC's membership structure by expanding the population size that a police chief, county attorney, and country sheriff can come from, prohibits members from using a designee to represent them, and adds an additional victim advocate member. Lastly, the amendment allows continuation of the agency for two years, subject for review by the Auditor General during its next sunset audit, and requires the agency to meet four times, rather than once annually.

These reforms are as pro-law enforcement as it gets, ensuring that ACJC continues its crucial work continues our efforts to promote public safety.”

Nguyen, and I were able to work together on a plan that prevents ACJC from dissolving, ensuring our criminal justice system receives uninterrupted resources and support. We would be doing a disservice to the selfless individuals who protect our communities if we allow ACJC to become obsolete."
