Plan to Designate Loop 202 in Honor of Charlie Kirk Moves Forward

PHOENIX, ARIZONA— A bill designating the Loop 202 as the Charlie Kirk Loop 202 is moving forward today after clearing the Senate Public Safety Committee with full Republican support.

SB 1010, sponsored by Senate President Warren Petersen, formally designates Loop 202 as the Charlie Kirk Loop 202 and requires the designation to be reflected in official state records, documentation, and roadway signage.

"Charlie devoted his life to public discourse and political participation," said President Petersen. "He believed Americans could disagree and still engage one another civilly and respectfully. He encouraged people, especially young people, to get involved in civic life and to participate in shaping the future of their communities. Designating Loop 202 ensures his contribution to civic engagement and public participation won't be forgotten. Let this name stand as a daily reminder of the importance of promoting American ideals."

Loop 202 spans roughly 77 miles across the Phoenix metropolitan area and connects with Interstate 10 on both ends, serving as a major transportation corridor for the region. Under SB 1010, the Arizona Department of Transportation would be directed to install a reasonable amount of signage reflecting the new designation. The bill specifies that the Charlie Kirk Highway designation does not supersede any existing designations assigned to Loop 202 and carries no anticipated fiscal impact to the state's General Fund.

"At its core, this designation is about the freedom to speak, debate, and participate in public life without fear," said President Petersen. "Charlie Kirk believed deeply in those ideals. Arizona has always been a place where people are encouraged to engage, challenge ideas, and make their voices heard. This designation reflects that tradition and reaffirms our commitment to protecting open dialogue in the public square."

SB 1010 now continues to the full Senate body for consideration.
