PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Arizona Senate Republicans are working to improve coordination between local and federal law enforcement by advancing a bill that clarifies the reporting rules guiding officers on the front lines. This legislation aims to enhance public safety, reduce confusion for law enforcement, and ensure that communities can trust in the consistent application of the law. The bill passed the Arizona Senate today and will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
SB 1055, sponsored by Senator Wendy Rogers, requires that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or U.S. Customs and Border Protection be notified immediately when a law enforcement official or agency arrests an individual who is unlawfully present in the United States. This legislation clarifies existing federal and state laws regarding the sharing of immigration status information for lawful purposes and specifies the circumstances under which such notification is required.
"When someone is under arrest and unlawfully present in our country, law enforcement should never have to hesitate, second-guess, or worry about whether doing the right thing will jeopardize their career," said Senator Rogers. "For too long, unclear policies and political pressure have created confusion that undermines public safety and puts officers in an impossible position. SB 1055 restores clarity by ensuring that law enforcement can immediately notify federal authorities as intended under existing law. This bill will strengthen coordination between agencies, support the brave men and women on the front lines, uphold the rule of law, and help prevent dangerous individuals from being released back into our communities. Arizona families deserve safe neighborhoods, consistent enforcement, and laws that prioritize public safety over politics."
