Statement by Heather Carter on the US Senate's decision to raise the federal tobacco sales age to 21

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement on the US Senate's decision to raise the federal

tobacco sales age to 21

"I applaud the action taken today by the United States Senate to raise the federal tobacco sales age to 21. In Arizona, an estimated 2,000 kids become new daily smokers every year. Delaying the age at which people first experiment or begin using tobacco will reduce the chance they ever become daily tobacco users.

While this is an important step, there is still work Arizona can and must do to control the use of this dangerous product and ensure that it stays out of the hands of Arizona kids. I will work with all Arizona elected officials to implement proven health focused strategies to ensure that we protect our kids from the devastating effects of tobacco."
