Inaugural class of Primary Care Physician Scholarship initiative unveiled

University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine will cover tuition, students commit to practicing in underserved Arizona communities

(State Capitol, Phoenix) – The University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine has unveiled its inaugural class for the Primary Care Physician Scholarships. The school is providing free tuition to these students who have agreed to practice primary care in an underserved community in Arizona for at least two years. The scholarship program addresses both the primary care physician shortage in Arizona and the ongoing concern of student debt.

This initiative was created in May 2019, when Republicans in the Legislature appropriated $8 million in funding to support the program. The first class of scholarship recipients include eight students at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix and 21 students at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson.
