Governor Ducey today signed SB 1231, a bill that eliminates antiquated laws that require a firefighter or police officer to live in the city where they serve.

"These residency requirements were put into place generations ago, when we didn't have the ease of travel we have now, " said Senator Boyer. "In the world where we live now, why should a firefighter who lives in Glendale not be allowed to work at a Phoenix fire station?"

The soaring cost of housing in some areas of Arizona is another reason this bill was important.

"New officers and firefighters are typically making $30,000-$40,000 a year. It's nearly impossible for some of them to find housing in the communities where they're serving. SB 1231 allows them to live where they can afford to live and work somewhere else."
