Senator Steve Smith will convene the Senate Committee on Commerce and Public Safety Tuesday for the second of three meetings addressing the thousands of high-paying jobs in Arizona that remain unfilled.
As Chairman of the Committee, Senator Smith hopes to get information and hear solutions from experts fueling the workforce pipeline within four populations:
1) Veterans
2) Transitioning inmates
3) High School and JTED students
4) Unemployed individuals
Speakers at the Tuesday hearing included Colonel Wanda Wright, Director of the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services, Charles Ryan, Director of the Arizona Department of Corrections, and Connie Wilhelm, President and Executive Director of the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona.
In addition to the three Senate hearings, Senator Smith brought legislators to GateWay Community College and Metro Tech High School, so Members could see firsthand efforts already in place. There will be a tour of the East Valley Institute of Technology in October.
The Senate Committee on Commerce and Public Safety mets at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hearing Room 1.
