Senator Barto earns leadership award from mental health advocacy group

Senator Nancy Barto has been honored by Mental Health America (MHA) with the Legislator Leadership Award. MHA was founded in 1909 and is the nation's leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and to promoting the overall mental health of all Americans.

The MHA Regional Policy Council cultivates a constructive partnership with state policy leaders and other mental health stakeholders to initiate, advocate for and implement federal and state policies that positively affect people living with mental health and substance use conditions.

“Senator Barto has been a champion and a voice for those individuals and their families impacted by behavioral health issues in Arizona,” said Kristina Sabetta, Executive Director of MHA Arizona, about her reason for nominating Senator Barto. “We are proud of the work she has accomplished and we look forward to our continued partnership.

"I am honored to be chosen for the Legislator Leadership Award," said Senator Barto. "Those struggling with mental illness too often find the mental health system difficult to nearly impossible to navigate - even when families or caregivers advocate on their behalf. It has been rewarding to have spent my years in the Legislature passing laws that improve how Arizona deals with and treats mental illness and families, and groups like MHA participate in the vital role of creating effective mental health legislation. I look forward to continuing to work with MHA and others to assure Arizona stays on the forefront of mental health policy that best serves these individuals and their families."

Mental Health America will honor Senator Barto at the Regional Policy Council meeting on July 19 in Denver.
